Fear and COVID-19 AND Interview: Bruce Bruinsma
Sunday Jul 12, 2020
Sunday Jul 12, 2020
COVID-19 has struck fear into the hearts of people across the nation and around the world, and those considered to be in "vulnerable" populations may especially receive the message that they should be afraid. For some of us, though, fear is a familiar foe. Today Cinthia begins by looking at fear in general and is then joined by Bruce Bruinsma, author of Retirement Reformation and leader of a movement by the same name. Mr. Bruinsma asserts that, instead of conforming to the portrayal of seniors as fragile and weak, those of retirement age can be leaders in the fight against fear, using their experience and learning to help younger generations know what to do with their fear in the current situation. Whether your fears focus on the coronavirus, aging, or entirely separate matters, this episode can challenge your perspective and help you gain strength. Join us!

You Have the Liberty to Be Free
Sunday Jul 05, 2020
Sunday Jul 05, 2020
How free are you? Do you truly experience liberty? Liberty and freedom are big concepts with big implications for politics, but they are also important concepts for those of us seeking to live our best lives, be our own best versions, and generally manage ourselves and our lives in healthy ways. Victor Frankl, for example, lived for years in concentration camps and found that he and other captives experienced differing levels of internal liberty, despite being equally deprived of their outward freedoms. If liberty involves the power and freedom to act as you choose to act and to manage your own mind, are you experiencing that power and freedom, or have you given up control to habits, grudges, regrets, addictions, codependent attachments, thinking patterns, or other forces? Join Cinthia to discuss what it means to live as truly free people and as those who embrace liberty, regardless of our circumstances.

Wisdom: The Gift of Maturity
Sunday Jun 28, 2020
Sunday Jun 28, 2020
Some decisions seem like such good ideas at the time… but they don’t always turn out that way. While we can’t predict all the factors all the time, wisdom enables us to make better decisions, ones that will benefit us long-term instead of simply making us feel better right now. Wisdom is different from intelligence or knowledge; it’s not even the same as education. Wisdom has to do with how we apply those things, and there are times when the wisest people don’t have the credentials we tend to value. God is eager to give us wisdom and urges us to ask for it. So why does wisdom seem so hard to grasp sometimes? And, if wisdom is supposed to increase with years, why do we sometimes find ourselves aging and confused at the same time? Join Cinthia to explore what wisdom is, how to get it, and how to keep walking as you seek this most valuable treasure.

"Why?!" - The Peace I Leave With You
Sunday Jun 14, 2020
Sunday Jun 14, 2020
Have you ever asked the question, “Why?!” Have you whispered it? Screamed it? Cried it? Sobbed it? “Why?” seems like such a natural question in a confusing, grief-soaked world, but too many of us have found ourselves stuck on the question. We may demand answers in an attempt to control the uncontrollable, change the unchangeable, or soothe what seems unbearable. And, while it’s good to know God can handle our questions, anger, and pain, sometimes we cling so hard to the question “Why?!” that we start to think our hope lies in obtaining answers -- answers that may not come in this lifetime. Today, Cinthia shares some other writers’ thoughts on this and encourages us to begin releasing our determination to never receive peace until we first receive what we judge to be a satisfactory answer to the question, “Why?!”

Show Up As A Grown-Up
Monday Jun 08, 2020
Monday Jun 08, 2020
Do you ever suspect that our society is low on grown-ups these days? We tend to believe we are entitled to consistently pleasant feelings and that someone is to blame if these aren't happening. We get confused about the difference between things that "feel" true and things that actually are. Cinthia explains that these ways of thinking tend to be hallmarks of childhood, not signs of a healthy adult approach. Just as we don't want little children trying to handle adult problems, we can't let the most childish and vulnerable parts of our psyches run our lives and make decisions that impact our lives and the lives of other people. So how do adults deal with feelings? What hopes should we grasp, and what losses should we accept? How can we grow up enough to stop needing to believe things that aren't true? Join Cinthia to examine some ideas that may be difficult but can help us to truly grow up.

COVID-19: The Great Reveal, Pt 2: Distress
Sunday May 31, 2020
Sunday May 31, 2020
How do you react under stress? And what does that tell you about your character? Today Cinthia continues her look at the way the pandemic is revealing things to us about ourselves, our relationships, and our world. She discusses the concept of distress tolerance as addressed by Dr. Marsha Linehan, as well as some ways to begin strengthening your ability to tolerate distress when necessary without turning to unhealthy coping mechanisms. She also explores the idea of radical acceptance and emphasizes that acceptance does not have to mean agreement with what is happening. Discomfort is a part of life, and we all have to work on our responses to it. Join Cinthia to look at strategies for dealing with the discomfort of life instead of making it worse with our reactions.

How do you know when you need help? Are you willing to get help when you need it? This episode has two related parts. The first is an interview with Michael Johnson, President of Slavic Gospel Association (SGA). He shares amazing stories of work happening in the Slavic nations as COVID-19 spreads but, like any sickness, fails to have the last word in light of the Gospel. SGA is helping many, and an opportunity to help is mentioned. Cinthia then continues with a look at how we know when we need to accept help for ourselves to deal with the problems and challenges in our own lives. Join Cinthia for specific criteria that can help you decide whether to reach out for help, as well as thoughts on why this can be so difficult to do and some ways to shift your perspective about it.
